Bali remains one of the world most visited tourists area. It is a strong magnet for travelers with interest in beautiful beaches, serene places, rich culture from the arts and crafts, never ending rituals, as well as its culinary attractions. I revisited Bali recently, and Bali everlasting magic brought me back to taste local seafood restaurants that line the seafront of Jimbaran while enjoying the ambiance and catching the ocean breeze.
Located at Bali’s west coast, Jimbaran that I knew along time ago was a quiet beach less visited by tourists in comparison to Kuta for the younger crowd and Sanur for the people who prefer less busy environment. It was not until 20 years ago when hotels developers identified the Jimbaran ocean front, not only because it is close to the airport but also because it is simply beautiful.
As time goes by, the area is known to be the place to eat any style of seafood. Rows of seafood stall from the less expensive place where you can eat and sit “a la fresca” and order your meal the Makassar way, Javanese way, Balinese way or any which way you prefer it to be prepared to the very pricy place where you can sit at private beach attached to five stars hotels.
The food is pretty good, but some chefs said that they don’t need much help when it comes to fresh seafood. As long as it is fresh, they can make it good. So, while the food is good, what is it then that attract those tourists?. It is probably the combination of the fact that they are in their “vacation mood”, there are entertainers (mostly a type of 3 or 5 Batak Mariachi quartet) or traditional Balinese musicians which somehow coordinate their time with the quartet, and finally the ambiance, the noise of water crushing the shore, the smell of salt water on the air mixed with the aromatic barbeque marinade, and, yes, probably the companionship.
A Barong dance and a few other traditional Bali dances entertained Jimbaran visitors.
Whilst I have probably visited most of the interesting places in Bali, it is always nice to go back to the Island of Gods again, as there are still quite a number of tourist attractions need to be explored. Maybe one needs to stay a couple of weeks in Bali to really savor the richness of the Balinese culture and to experience the interesting places around the island
