Student Loan Consolidation in the USA (United States American)

In the United States, federal student loans are consolidated somewhat differently than in the UK, as federal student loansare guaranteed by the U.S. government.

In a federal student loan consolidation, existing loans are purchased by the Department of Education . Interest rates for the consolidation are based on that year's student loan rate, which is in turn based on the 91-day Treasury bill rate at the last auction in May of each calendar year.

Student loan rates can fluctuate from the current low of 4.70% to a maximum of 8.25% for federal Stafford loans, 9% for PLUS loans. Upon consolidation, a fixed interest rate is set based on the then-current interest rate. Reconsolidating does not change that rate. If the student combines loans of different types and rates into one new consolidation loan, a weighted average calculation will establish the appropriate rate based on the then-current interest rates of the different loans being consolidated together.

Federal student loan consolidation is often referred to as refinancing, which is incorrect because theloan rates are not changed, merely locked in. Unlike private sector debt consolidation, student loan consolidation does not incur any fees for the borrower; private companies make money on student loan consolidation by reaping subsidies from the federal government.

Student loan consolidation can be beneficial to students' credit rating, but it's important to note that not all federal student loan consolidation companies report their loans to all credit bureaus.

Swimming Pool Heaters For More Use Of The Pool

Swimming Pool

During the winter, you might not as enthusiastic or willing to jump into the pool as you were during the summer. A big plunge into a body of chilly water is refreshing when it’s hot, but painful and undesirable in the midst of the cold season. But it seems like kind of a waste to not use a pool all year round.

If you do own a pool, you probably want to get as much use out of it as possible. Owning a pool means plenty of recreation for the family and for guests, and swimming is also one of the best types of aerobic exercise.

So if you want to be able to get a good work out and entertain the kids during the winter and not just in the warmer spring and summer seasons, installing a swimming pool heater is the solution that you’re looking for.

Swimming pool heaters can help extend the use of your pool by keeping the pool water at a temperature that’s tolerable for swimming use.

You might be reluctant to use a swimming pool heater because it might seem really expensive to maintain. However, if you properly insulate your pool you can save a lot of heat and money.

It’s best to use swimming pool heaters that have a cover because this prevents the heat from escaping and makes pool heating efficient by using and keeping in all the heat as much as possible. Using and maintaining a swimming pool heater doesn’t have to be an outrageously expensive venture.

There are 3 main kinds of swimming pool heaters: gas, electric and solar. Each has its pros and cons. Gas swimming pool heaters are popular because the heaters themselves are cheap, but buying the fuel to run them can accumulate a lot of costs and they’re not environmentally friendly.

Electric heaters are more expensive initially, but actually running them is cheaper than using gas, so they can probably be used more than a gas pool heater. Solar heaters are environmentally friend and they use outside light and heat, as do electric heaters, but they simply circulate it into the pool rather than converting it into electric energy, so there’s no cost to run them, but they won’t work as well when the weather isn’t sunny anymore.

So for a cold winter, gas or electric is a better option and the decision to purchase a swimming pool heater will depend on how long you want to operate it and how much you want to spend.

White Wicker Furniture

White Wicker Furniture

I’m not a professional decorator or anything, but I do take a certain amount of pride in the way my home looks. I manage to make the most of my limited space, and have a pretty good eye for which couches, chairs, tables, and accessories would look best within my overall design scheme.

Surprisingly enough, white wicker furniture plays a rather prominent role both inside and outside my house.

Decorating with outdoor white wicker furniture is a no-brainer around here. I can’t even count the number of porches and patios that feature these sets. I think one of the reasons white wicker furniture is so popular is because of its versatility.

Though the material is obviously the same, you can change things up by mixing and matching the fabric on the cushions, pillows, and table umbrella. And it’s easy to swap out the old fabric for a new design, which gives you the feeling of having a brand-new patio set without the high price tag. I love it!

The same principle holds true for indoor white wicker furniture. Its versatility makes it perfect for practically any room in the house. For instance, I have a sun room off the kitchen that features several great pieces, including a chaise lounge, armchair, ottoman, and rocking chair.

This is probably the most comfortable room in the whole place, and is the one that the family flocks to for television, board games, homework, and reading. White wicker furniture is also terrific for bedrooms.

It might sound odd at first, but I have some wonderful bureaus, nightstands, and vanity tables in my home — all of which have received lots of compliments from guests and visitors.

White wicker furniture probably wouldn’t go over too well if you were trying to decorate a formal sitting room or dining room, but it’s great just about everywhere else. The pieces are just so cozy and inviting that they give your rooms a warm, comfortable feeling that glass, lacquer, and even wood can’t pull off half as well.

Some people wonder about the durability of white wicker furniture and worry that it perhaps won’t last as long as other materials. This is a valid question, since nobody wants to replace their sofa or love seat every five years or whatever. But I’m happy to report that all of my furnishings have held up fabulously over the years — even withstanding everything that my young children could dish out!

If you’re looking for an affordable, stylish way to decorate your home, I recommend checking out white wicker furniture. The designs are classic and timeless, and you’ll get a lot of mileage for your money. You’ll be surprised at how amazing your home can look with the right furnishings!

Cost-effective Front Yard Landscaping Ideash

Front Yard Landscaping

Owning a home is rewarding, and expensive. As a homeowner, you are constantly looking and searching for ways to both maintain the value of your home as well as improving it for the market place. One of the best places to do this is the exterior of the house, whether it is the front yard, the back yard, or the roof. In fact, front yard landscaping is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve your house for maximum fair market home value. So whether you are looking to move, or simply want to improve the value of your house, here are a couple of good front yard landscaping ideas to try out for yourself.

First of all, all good front yard landscaping ideas have a couple of things in common. Most important of all is the idea of curb appeal. Curb appeal basically means the aesthetics of the house as it is viewed from the curb. You have probably often heard the expressions about the importance of a first impression. Curb appeal basically means the first impression that prospective home buyers have on your house. Any and all of your front yard landscaping ideas need to have a positive impact on your curb appeal. Improve your curb appeal and improve your home’s value.

Of course, not everyone agrees on all front yard landscaping ideas. Like many other interior design choices, you are usually operating with an expiration date. Not all design looks age well, and you should generally avoid both the dated and the very trendy. Your front yard landscaping ideas should, whenever possible, have a classic look that will last years, if not decades.

Then again, all front yard landscaping ideas should do a couple of things. First of all, they should properly showcase the house. After all, the house is the most important part of the property. You should think about twice where you plant those trees; are the blocking the house and windows too much, or are they blocking them not enough? You need to balance clean lines and a clean look with providing privacy and shade.

Whatever path you choose, your front yard landscaping ideas should have a good balance of your personality. Obviously, you should landscape your house in a way that you love, but with the knowledge that not everyone has the same taste. Make your choices not too bold and not too timid. I especially recommend you consult with realtors for their thoughts on your front yard landscaping ideas to make sure that you are improving your home, both for you and for your investment!

Slash drinking limits for the over-65s to protect their bodies and minds, say doctors

Alcohol limits for pensioners should be slashed to protect their ageing bodies and minds, doctors said last night.

They favour an upper limit of 1.5 units a day for men – little more than half a pint of beer, which is much lower than the current recommendation of three to four units a day.

For women over 65, the limit should be lowered from two to three units a day - equivalent to a glass of wine - to possibly just one (a single vodka and coke).

New limits: Experts have suggested that over 65s should lower their alcohol intake to protect their ageing bodies and minds

The combination of a growing use of alcohol and the ageing population is creating a generation of ‘hidden addicts’ who urgently need help, a report by the Royal College of Psychiatrists warns.

A third of older people with alcohol problems develop them later in life due to issues ranging from the strain of bereavement to the boredom of retirement.

Dr Tony Rao, a consultant in old-age psychiatry and one of the report’s authors, said: ‘As we age, there are other accompanying factors such as increasing memory problems and physical health problems and less of an ability to get rid of alcohol from the blood stream.

‘This means that the effect of what we would currently call the safe limits is actually more damaging for older people.’

The ageing body contains less water and more fat, meaning smaller amounts of alcohol can do more damage.

The liver takes longer to break down the poisons in alcohol, meaning they linger for longer in the body.

Finally, the brain is more rapidly affected, raising the risk of problems with memory, co-ordination and falls and fractures.

The report warns that growing alcohol and drug misuse among the ‘baby boomer’ generation is creating a ‘burgeoning public health problem’.

The taking of illegal drugs and the misuse of prescription and over-the-counter medicines has become more prevalent among the over-40s in recent years and many of these people are expected to maintain these habits as they age.

Recommendations include screening by GPs for substance misuse among the over-65s as part of a routine health check and a public campaign targeted at older people.

Ilana Crome, professor of addiction psychiatry and chairman of the working group, said: ‘We hope this report highlights the scale of the problem, and that the multiple medical and social needs of this group of people are not ignored any longer.’

Don Shenker, of Alcohol Concern, said: ‘We should remember that older people often turn to alcohol in later life as a coping mechanism and this can remain stubbornly hidden from view.’

The Department of Health said: ‘Alcohol misuse is a major public health issue, no matter what age you are.

‘We are already taking action to tackle problem drinking, including plans to stop supermarkets selling below cost alcohol and working to introduce a tougher licensing regime.

‘However, individuals have responsibilities too and everyone should drink responsibly within the recommended alcohol limits.

‘All advice is kept under review. We welcome any addition to the evidence base in this area and will consider this report carefully.’

Breastfeeding boom: Middle-class mothers lead the charge with 90% rejecting formula milk

Mother breast feeding baby

Soaring numbers of new mothers are breastfeeding, figures show.

More than eight in ten women start their babies on breast milk compared to six in ten in 1990.

The proportion is even higher among middle-class women with well-paid jobs – more than 90 per cent of mothers in managerial or professional roles breastfeed.

The rise follows years of high profile government ‘breast is best’ campaigns promoting the benefits of breast milk over formula milk.

Breast-feeding transfers a mother’s immunity to her baby, helping to protect it from chest and ear infections, eczema and stomach bugs.

Studies have also shown that it helps babies’ brain development and reduces their chance of becoming obese when they grow up.

Figures from the NHS Information Centre show that 81 per cent of mothers in the UK breastfeed for at least the first six weeks, up from 76 per cent in 2005 and 62 per cent in 1990. More than 90 per cent of those in professional or managerial roles, such as doctors, lawyers or senior managers on companies, breastfeed.

This compares to 74 per cent of those in routine or manual jobs – such as cleaners or those working on supermarket checkouts – and 71 per cent of women who have never worked.

Teenage mums are also far less likely to breastfeed than slightly older women.

Breast is best: The study comes days after hundreds breast fed their babies in a 'flashmob' awareness raising exercise at The Trafford Centre in Manchester

Just 63 per cent of women under 16 breastfeed compared to 87 per cent of those over the age of 30.

The figures, based on a survey of 15,600 women, do not show how many are still breastfeeding six months after the baby is born – as advised by the Department of Health – but it is likely to be significantly lower. They also showed that the numbers smoking during pregnancy had fallen significantly in last five years.

Just 12 per cent of mothers smoked throughout their pregnancy in 2010, down from 17 per cent in 2005.

Jane Munro, from the Royal College of Midwives, said: ‘The increase in the number of women starting to breastfeed and the reduction in smoking before and during pregnancy is good news for the health of the nation. It is a clear indication of the success of campaigning on public health in these areas.

‘These are, however, early findings and do not give us the important information about how long women carry on breastfeeding.’

She added: ‘This is a crucial issue because we know that many women stop breastfeeding when they leave hospital.’

Marianne Monie, of support group the Breastfeeding Network, said: ‘Breastfeeding their baby is something we know is close to many mums’ hearts, and most babies in start off breastfeeding.

‘The last survey from 2005 told us that, sadly, the vast majority of women who stopped breastfeeding in the first six weeks wanted to carry on for longer.

Miss Monie added: ‘We want to see women fully supported with skilled help to breastfeed for as long as they want to continue.

‘Breastfeeding is not just good for mothers and babies but because breastfed babies are ill less than babies fed infant formula, supporting mothers to breastfeed can also save the NHS money.’

Modern and Elegant Glass Top Dining Tables

Despite the economy being down for a while, my company managed to have a pretty good fiscal year. As a result, all employees are getting a pretty good bonus soon. Some of my co-workers are planning to use their money for a much-needed holiday or to splurge on something fun that they normally wouldn’t get.

Others are going to deposit their checks directly into their banks. I’ve already got plans for my share: I desperately need to upgrade the furniture in nearly every room of my house. Everything I have is old, worn, and hopelessly out of date, so this cash infusion is coming at a good time.

I’m going to begin by looking at glass top dining tables. I love entertaining at my house, and have thrown quite a few dinner parties in the past. But to be honest, it began to be kind of embarrassing to have people over once I noticed just how shabby my furniture was.

I’m sure my friends don’t care one way or the other, but I certainly do. It will be so nice to have as beautiful glass top dining table in place of the dinged and scarred oak model I have now.

I’ve always been fond of glass top dining tables. I think the style looks both modern and elegant, and will class up my future parties for sure. I can leave the surface exposed for those times when I have formal parties or cover it with a nice tablecloth for those events where I desire a warmer, cozier atmosphere.

The true beauty of a glass top dining table is how flexible it is in the overall design scheme. I can fill the rest of the room with other furniture and accessories of almost any material and color, and they’ll fit right in.

Once I get a glass top dining table that I like, I’m going to overhaul the living room furniture as well. I need to get rid of my couch, as it looks like a frat house reject, and then move on to the bedroom. I could use a new bed, nightstand, and bureaus up there as well.

If I have any money left over after taking care of these three rooms, maybe I can do something about my aging kitchen appliances.

It shouldn’t be too difficult to find stylish glass top dining tables in my budget range, so I’m going to start looking this weekend. There are a few furniture outlets within driving distance of my house, and I’ll also check online if I need a better selection.

I’m just thankful that I was able to get a bonus this year. It was completely unexpected, but will certainly be put to good use!

6 Cause Inflation to Foreign Exchange

6 Cause Inflation to Foreign Exchange
Aside from factors such as interest rates and inflation, the exchange rate is one of the most important determinants of a country's relative level of economic health. Exchange rates play a vital role in a country's level of trade, which is critical to most every free market economy in the world. For this reason, exchange rates are among the most watched, analyzed and governmentally manipulated economic measures. But exchange rates matter on a smaller scale as well: they impact the real return of an investor's portfolio. Here we look at some of the major forces behind exchange rate movements.
Overview
Before we look at these forces, we should sketch out how exchange rate movements affect a nation's trading relationships with other nations. A higher currency makes a country's exports more expensive and imports cheaper in foreign markets; a lower currency makes a country's exports cheaper and its imports more expensive in foreign markets. A higher exchange rate can be expected to lower the country's balance of trade, while a lower exchange rate would increase it.
Determinants of Exchange Rates
Numerous factors determine exchange rates, and all are related to the trading relationship between two countries. Remember, exchange rates are relative, and are expressed as a comparison of the currencies of two countries. The following are some of the principal determinants of the exchange rate between two countries. Note that these factors are in no particular order; like many aspects of economics, the relative importance of these factors is subject to much debate.
1. Differentials in Inflation
As a general rule, a country with a consistently lower inflation rate exhibits a rising currency value, as its purchasing power increases relative to other currencies. During the last half of the twentieth century, the countries with low inflation included Japan, Germany and Switzerland, while the U.S. and Canada achieved low inflation only later. Those countries with higher inflation typically see depreciation in their currency in relation to the currencies of their trading partners. This is also usually accompanied by higher interest rates. (To learn more, see Cost-Push Inflation Versus Demand-Pull Inflation.)
2. Differentials in Interest Rates
Interest rates, inflation and exchange rates are all highly correlated. By manipulating interest rates, central banks exert influence over both inflation and exchange rates, and changing interest rates impact inflation and currency values. Higher interest rates offer lenders in an economy a higher return relative to other countries. Therefore, higher interest rates attract foreign capital and cause the exchange rate to rise. The impact of higher interest rates is mitigated, however, if inflation in the country is much higher than in others, or if additional factors serve to drive the currency down. The opposite relationship exists for decreasing interest rates - that is, lower interest rates tend to decrease exchange rates. (For further reading, see What Is Fiscal Policy?)
3. Current-Account Deficits
The current account is the balance of trade between a country and its trading partners, reflecting all payments between countries for goods, services, interest and dividends. A deficit in the current account shows the country is spending more on foreign trade than it is earning, and that it is borrowing capital from foreign sources to make up the deficit. In other words, the country requires more foreign currency than it receives through sales of exports, and it supplies more of its own currency than foreigners demand for its products. The excess demand for foreign currency lowers the country's exchange rate until domestic goods and services are cheap enough for foreigners, and foreign assets are too expensive to generate sales for domestic interests. (For more, see Understanding The Current Account In The Balance Of Payments.)
4. Public Debt
Countries will engage in large-scale deficit financing to pay for public sector projects and governmental funding. While such activity stimulates the domestic economy, nations with large public deficits and debts are less attractive to foreign investors. The reason? A large debt encourages inflation, and if inflation is high, the debt will be serviced and ultimately paid off with cheaper real dollars in the future.
In the worst case scenario, a government may print money to pay part of a large debt, but increasing the money supply inevitably causes inflation. Moreover, if a government is not able to service its deficit through domestic means (selling domestic bonds, increasing the money supply), then it must increase the supply of securities for sale to foreigners, thereby lowering their prices. Finally, a large debt may prove worrisome to foreigners if they believe the country risks defaulting on its obligations. Foreigners will be less willing to own securities denominated in that currency if the risk of default is great. For this reason, the country's debt rating (as determined by Moody's or Standard & Poor's, for example) is a crucial determinant of its exchange rate.
5. Terms of Trade
A ratio comparing export prices to import prices, the terms of trade is related to current accounts and the balance of payments. If the price of a country's exports rises by a greater rate than that of its imports, its terms of trade have favorably improved. Increasing terms of trade shows greater demand for the country's exports. This, in turn, results in rising revenues from exports, which provides increased demand for the country's currency (and an increase in the currency's value). If the price of exports rises by a smaller rate than that of its imports, the currency's value will decrease in relation to its trading partners.
6. Political Stability and Economic Performance
Foreign investors inevitably seek out stable countries with strong economic performance in which to invest their capital. A country with such positive attributes will draw investment funds away from other countries perceived to have more political and economic risk. Political turmoil, for example, can cause a loss of confidence in a currency and a movement of capital to the currencies of more stable countries.

How To Deal With Garden Pests

aphids

While tending to my own garden, I have found that one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a gardener is to walk outside to check on your plants. It’s just a routine walk to make sure that your garden is thriving, but you end up finding holes in all of your plants that looked fine only hours before.

The explanations for some of these plant-destroying holes are garden pests. Some of the main garden pests are slugs, worms, caterpillars, birds, snails, and the occasional gopher. Although you can never wipe out these pests entirely, after all your hard work in the garden you have to do something.

Insects are one of the worst things to have in your garden; they can live under the soil, in old weeds or piles of leaves, or in a number of other places. In order to help keep insects away, always try and eliminate places in your garden and near your garden that these insects and other plant diseases could be living.

Remove old leaves, weeds, or any other decaying matter that insects and diseases could be living in from your yard. Also, regularly turn over your garden soil and break apart any clumps of dirt so that you can eliminate the living spaces any insects that might be hiding underground.

Another way to rid your garden of the pests is to use dormant spray, which is used to keep destructive insects and diseases under control. It is best that you use dormant spray when your plants are dormant, usually around February or early March. I have used dormant spray many times on my garden and it has worked wonders on keeping insects out. But as I learned from
experience, dormant spray is only effective if you follow the correct instructions.

When I first decided to use some on my garden, I just dumped it everywhere in hopes of killing everything harmful. Unfortunately I ended up killing my entire garden along with my neighbors. Some insects can be beneficial to your garden though, so be sure to find out which insects help your garden.

Another pest problem I’ve had besides insects has been birds. Whenever I see birds in my garden I run outside a chase them away, but as soon as I step inside they come right back. The solution that I’ve come up with to keep the birds away from my garden is to put a bird feeder in my yard. Instead of costing me time and money by eating my garden, the birds eat at the bird feeder. In the long run it will save you money.

Not only can a bird feeder help keep birds away from your garden, but they can also be a new part of your yard decoration. Although not completely eliminating my bird problem, my bird feeder has made the problem smaller. Getting a dog has also helped.

If you start seeing mounds of dirt around your yard, and your plants keep unexplainably dying, you can assume that you have a gopher problem. Thankfully, this is one of the few garden pasts that I haven’t had. However my friend has struggled with a tremendous gopher infestation, so I decided to research it.

Gophers are rodents that are five to fourteen inches long. Their fur can be black, light brown, or white, and they have small tails. One method of getting rid of these root-eating pests is to set traps. The key to successfully capturing a gopher using a trap is to successfully locate the gopher’s tunnels and set the trap correctly. Another way to get rid of them is to use smoke bombs, which you place into the tunnel and the smoke spreads through out it and hopefully reaches the gopher.

If you suspect that your gardens are being pillaged by any of the pests I mentioned, I encourage you to try your hardest to eliminate the problem as soon as possible. The longer you let the species stay, the more established it will become.

Chocolate milk is ideal drink to recover from exercise and boost performance, claim scientists

Thirst quencher: Amateur cyclists built more muscle and shaved off more fat if they drank chocolate milkshakes after exercise instead of sports drinks

After an exhausting session on the treadmill, many athletes reach for an isotonic sports drink or good old-fashioned water.

But two new studies from The University of Texas at Austin show that chocolate milk is the ideal post-workout recovery drink.

'Serious and amateur athletes alike enjoyed physical recovery benefits when they drank low-fat chocolate milk after a vigorous workout,' said lead researcher Dr John Ivy.

'The advantages for the study participants were better body composition in the form of more muscle and less fat, improved times while working out and overall better physical shape than peers who consumed sports beverages that just contained carbohydrates.'

Dr Ivy and his team compared the recovery benefits of drinking low-fat chocolate milk after exercise to the effects of a carbohydrate beverage with the same ingredients and calories as typical sports drinks as well as to a calorie-free beverage.

They asked 10 trained cyclists to ride a bike for 90 minutes at moderate intensity, then for 10 minutes of high intensity intervals.

The scientists found the athletes had significantly more power and rode faster (reduced their ride time by an average of six minutes) when they consumed low-fat chocolate milk rather than a carbohydrate sports drink or calorie-free beverage.

The team also tested 32 amateur male and female cyclists, putting them through five intense spinning sessions a week followed by one of the three beverages.

They found after four and a half weeks that chocolate milk drinkers had twice the improvement in maximal oxygen uptake compared to the others.

Maximal oxygen uptake is one indicator of an athlete's aerobic endurance and ability to perform sustained exercise.

The amateur cyclists also built more muscle and shaved off more fat during training when they drank low-fat chocolate milk.

'We don’t yet understand exactly what mechanism is causing low-fat chocolate milk to give athletes these advantages - that will take more research,' said Dr Ivy.

'But there's something in the naturally-occurring protein and carbohydrate mix that offers significant benefits.'
