Cancer Survivor Stories are incredibly inspiring. October was Breast Cancer Awareness month but, honestly, women need to be aware of the possibility of cancer every month, every day, of the year. Giuliana Rancic revealed her diagnoses last month, which brings up the subject of other celebrity cancer survivor stories. These stories are not special because they are celebrities, but because their notoriety allows them to reach many women. So, here are some remarkable celebrity cancer survival stories that can inspire all of us.
1. SHERYL CROW
Sheryl Crow’s cancer survivor story is particularly poignant not only because she also helped Lance Armstrong through much of his illness, but also because of what she’s done with her diagnosis. Since being diagnosed at 44 and going through both surgery and radiation, Sheryl is vocal about advocating annual mammograms. Regular checkups and appointments increases your chances of catching any type of cancer as early as possible.
2. CYNTHIA NIXON
Cynthia Nixon’s story is inspiring as well. She helped her mother battle breast cancer not once but twice. Her mother survived and so did she. Following a lumpectomy and ensuing radiation treatments, she made the announcement that she was cancer free two years after being diagnosed.
3. OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN
Olivia Newton-John was diagnosed in 1992. Although scared of going through chemotherapy, she finally made the decision to go with the treatment because of her child. She went through a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Her cancer survivor story is truly inspiring: Olivia founded a cancer and wellness center in Australia. Located at Austin Hospital, it is the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre and Wellness Centre.
4. WANDA SYKES
Comedian Wanda Sykes was diagnosed with breast cancer just this year. She’s already undergone a mastectomy. She was going to have a breast reduction when the cancer was discovered, emphasizing how important it is to have yearly breast exams.
5. ANDREA MITCHELL
Andrea is an anchor on “Good Morning, America.” She discovered a lump in her breast during a self examination. She was 46 when the diagnosis was confirmed, and had surgery to remove the lump. Part of her cancer survivor story involves becoming an outspoken advocate about the importance of eating healthy and staying away from processed foods.
6. SUZANNE SOMERS
Suzanne Somers discovered she had breast cancer back in 2000. Rather than relying on chemotherapy, she decided on alternative cancer treatments. Her choices and her outspoken philosophies on certain treatments have sparked controversy, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It keeps the subject alive and thus underlines the importance of annual mammograms and preventative measures.
7. CHRISTINA APPLEGATE
Christina Applegate’s diagnosis occurred in 2008 and required a double mastectomy. Within one month of the surgery, doctors pronounced her cancer free, making hers an incredible cancer survivor story. She is open about her feelings of anger, fear, and sadness, and encourages other cancer sufferers and survivors to be open as well.
