This list looks at ten apes (individual apes, not whole species) that exemplify extraordinary mental faculty or physical skills, for which they deserve recognition. Each earns a spot on the list for a unique reason, and examples from all the extant ape groups are featured; including gorillas, chimpanzees, orangutans and gibbons. To review, apes belong to the same classification order (primates) as monkeys, lemurs and marmosets, but are generally distinguished from these by a lack of a tail and/or other traits.

Not surprisingly, most ape populations are currently endangered as a result of habitat loss, and so it is in a spirit of conservation and protection that I offer this top ten. Please enjoy.

10
Koko

Koko is a female lowland gorilla who was born into captivity in the San Francisco Zoo, in 1971. She is famous for having learned over 1,000 signs in American Sign Language (technically, it’s a slightly modified version of ASL, which her trainer Penny Patterson calls GSL, Gorilla Sign Language). Although almost all the signs she knows are nouns and adjectives, and she is unable to construct sentences, she has demonstrated aptitude by inventing new signs based on her existing vocabulary. For example, she combined the words “water” and “bird” to describe ducks and swans. She also has used the language to communicate emotion, signing “frown,” “cry,” and “sad” when her pet cat was killed by a car. In addition to her prowess in signing, Koko can also understand about 2,000 words in spoken English. While many of the claims about her capacity to communicate have been contended, she is, nonetheless, an impressive specimen and her progress has raised important questions about our gorilla relatives.

Ken Allen

Also known as the “hairy Houdini,” Ken was a male Bornean orangutan born into captivity (also in 1971) in the San Diego Zoo. He achieved celebrity status in the summer of 1985, by outsmarting his keepers and escaping from his enclosure on three separate occasions, and also helping other orangutans escape from the same enclosure.

Zoo personnel were baffled at how the ape managed the feat, resorting to installing hidden cameras (which proved nothing as Ken somehow knew when he was under surveillance) and hiring professional rock-climbers to examine the enclosure inch-by-inch to find every possible exit. Ken spent his short-lived periods of freedom strolling leisurely around the zoo, admiring the animals and behaving congenially with human zoo goers. Eventually, the orangutan home was rendered escape-proof, but not before this esc-ape artist had captured the hearts of the public, inspiring at least one known song, a work of short fiction, and various t-shirts and bumper stickers. In the year 2000, Ken was diagnosed with cancer and euthanized.

Zippy

Zippy was a chimpanzee actor and regular feature on the Ed Sullivan Show, the Howdy Doody Show and other American comedy television shows in the 1950’s and 60’s. He entertained audiences with his bike riding, roller-skating and genuinely handsome smile. Indeed, Zippy was so popular that a line of stuffed dolls were produced in his likeness and, today, these toys are among the most cherished vintage items. Other chimpanzee actors meriting a brief mention are Jiggs, the first “Cheeta” from the 1930’s Tarzan movies, Evie from Battlestar Galactica, Punkun from the Japanese show Tensai Shumira Zoo, and Mikey from the Manchurian Candidate, Saturday Night Live and the World Series of Poker.

Anonymous

In 1996, while filming a wildlife documentary in the remote jungles of Borneo, actress Julia Roberts was overpowered by a 300-pound (130 k) male orangutan, who was, apparently, intent on mating. Forced copulation is quite common in orangutan societies and it accounts for a large part of their reproduction. Exploits of orangutans upon human women are also well documented, however referring to these occurrences as acts of rape is somewhat incorrect, as it would ascribe criminal motives to a blameless animal. In any event, Julia was removed from the orangutan’s grasp with the help of five crew hands who were present, and she escaped the incident unscathed. In her own words, “He wanted to play as though I was a doll, or carry me off and have a smooch. It got a bit out of hand, but I knew his intentions were playful, and so I think that he paid me a compliment. He had the strength of an entire person’s body in one finger. He could have crushed me.” There’s also video footage of this encounter.

Where there’s no harm, there’s no foul, and so despite an unsuccessful try, this nameless ape earns his spot on our list for simply setting his hopes high.

6
Tião

Tião was a chimpanzee from the Rio de Janeiro Zoo, who was a candidate for the office of mayor in Rio de Janeiro, in 1988. Representing the “Brazilian Banana Party,” the event was a farce perpetrated by the comedy duo Casseta & Planeta, who gave the campaign the slogan “Vote Monkey, Get Monkey.” The chimp, who also gained notoriety for throwing feces at various politicians at the zoo, ultimately received over 400,000 of the votes, or about 9.5%. All of these were officially recorded as “null” but it was enough for him to finish in a respectable third place.

5
Michael

Michael was an orphan silverback gorilla from Cameroon who, as a baby in the wild, survived the violent poaching of his mother. After this he was brought to California, where he learned sign language at the Gorilla Foundation under the tutelage of Koko. Experts believe Michael witnessed the attack on his mother, and used signs to describe the traumatic event.

At the Foundation, Michael also learned how to paint and his works have been deemed “impressionist” (as opposed to the abstract works of other gorilla artists, including Koko). He always picked his own colors, and he often made a handprint on the canvas, as a signature. One of his most distinguished pieces is a portrait he painted from memory of his pet dog, a border collie whom he named Apple. Michael died of heart failure in the year 2000, and his works are currently available for purchase online.

4
Buddy

Buddy was a larger-than-average Congolese lowland gorilla who joined the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in the 1930’s. Renamed Gargantua and advertised as “The Largest and Fiercest Gorilla Ever Brought Before the Eyes of Civilized Man,” this capable ape is credited with single-handedly saving the iconic circus company from financial ruin during the Great Depression.

Most remarkable about Buddy is the fact that he overcame two brushes with death in his captive childhood. The first event occurred was when he was living in the custody of a sea captain, and a sailor cruelly splashed nitric acid in his face, permanently scaring him physically and emotionally. This trauma caused a lifelong pattern of intense aggression towards humans, adding to his imposing Gargantua persona. The second hardship was a bout of Double Pneumonia from which Buddy suffered greatly, but recovered with the help of a fringe ape veterinarian named Gertrude Lintz, who also helped repair his damaged face.

Buddy’s size was indeed a marvel, and his skeleton now resides with the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University.

3
Jacco Macacco

Jacco Macacco was a blood-sport champion who competed in the 1820’s at the Westminster Pit dog-fighting arena, in London. During his prestigious career, Jacco wowed spectators with his unique throat-slitting style, defeating some of the most touted dogs in epic struggles (several upwards of twice his weight), and became the subject of many celebratory drawings and paintings.

It should be noted that Jacco’s exact species is unknown, and although the moniker Macacco [sic] is Portuguese for “monkey” and his vocation was categorically “monkey-baiting,” given the detailed descriptions of him most believe he belonged the Siamang gibbon group of apes of Southwest Asia.

Jacco’s heyday was at the height of animal-baiting popularity, an attraction that soon after dissipated and was legally banned by parliament’s Cruelty to Animals Act, of 1835.

2
Ham

Ham was a chimpanzee astronaut who was launched into Earth’s outer orbit on January 31, 1961, from Cape Canaveral, Florida. His historic mission, part of the American Mercury Project, lasted roughly 17 minutes before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean.

Calling him a “space explorer” might be a stretch, but he certainly qualifies as a pioneer, comparable to the goat, duck and chicken that went up in Montgolfier’s hot air balloon in Paris, in 1783.

NASA was hesitant to name their chimpanzee too early, for fear that bad PR that might ensue with his death (had the experiment failed), and so prior to his safe return he was known solely as #65. Although an important milestone among apes (he preceded Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 ascent by three months) his entry into the final frontier was not the first by an animal; that distinction belonging to a dog named Laika, who was launched by Soviet Russia, in 1957.

1
Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was a Homo sapiens born in England in 1643, who ranks among the world’s most renowned figures in science (or “natural philosophy” as it was called during his lifetime), physics and astronomy. His works include, most famously, his eponymous law of universal gravitation and his eponymous three laws of motion, which, when published in his 1687 masterpiece Principia, provided humankind with an understanding of the physical universe for centuries, and which continue to be the foundational standards for all modern mechanics and engineering. Newton also made advancements in the fields of light and color theory, sound and of powers and roots in mathematics.

It would be nigh impossible to overstate his contribution to civilization as he is often regarded as having one of the greatest impacts of any genius in history (together with Albert Einstein.) An inscription on his monument tomb reads as follows (Latin translated to English):

“Here is buried Isaac Newton, Knight, who by a strength of mind almost divine, and mathematical principles peculiarly his own, explored the course and figures of the planets, the paths of comets, the tides of the sea, the dissimilarities in rays of light, and, what no other scholar has previously imagined, the properties of the colors thus produced. Diligent, sagacious, and faithful, in his expositions of nature, antiquity and the holy scriptures, he vindicated by his philosophy the majesty of God mighty and good, and expressed the simplicity of the gospel in his manners. Mortals rejoice that there has existed such and so great an ornament of the human race.”

Bonus
Jack

Disqualified as a non-ape, Jack was a capable baboon from South Africa, who worked as the personal assistant to a Cape railroad employee named Jumper Wide, who had lost both his legs in a train accident. Working at the station, Jack initially helped with the day-to-day mobility of the crippled Wide, but was subsequently trained by Wide to operate the trains’ switches, essentially to perform all of the duties of a hired, human signalman.

Understandably, many arriving at the station were amazed to see a baboon at the controls, and one woman fainted at the sight. The situation was investigated by the governmental authority, and Jack proved to be extremely proficient and reliable at his post, and was allowed to keep the job. He was even given an employee number and compensation.

The story of Jumper Wide and Jack is a tender tale of human-animal friendship, and Wide was deeply grief-stricken when Jack succumbed to tuberculosis and died, in 1890. Jack’s skull remains on display at the Albany Museum at Rhodes University near Port Elizabeth.

‘Finding Nemo’ in Nusa Lembongan

A wonderful underwater world. JP/Isao Soga

A plan to go diving was already in my mind when I took a flight from Jakarta to Bali. As soon as I arrived on the island, I immediately set off for Sanur and crossed the Badung Strait by public speedboat.

I was heading for Nusa Lembongan, an island that lies next to Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan off of Bali’s south-east coast.

The island is well-known for its numerous dive spots. There are at least seven dive spots around the island, home to a variety of attractive aquatic creatures and a wonderful underwater landscape.

One of those spots is Manta Point, which lies off of the southern shore of Nusa Penida, a world-class diving site famed for its gigantic manta rays.

And if you come during the right season, from May to September, it is highly likely that you will bump into the famously unique sunfish, also known as the mola-mola.

Diving lesson is given in the pool before taking the real plunge in the sea. JP/Vyara Wurjanta

But it had been four years since my last dive and I had virtually forgotten everything I had learned. Therefore, a preliminary refresh lesson in a swimming pool was a must.

A little bit nervous, I reluctantly fought the anxious feeling when I practiced the skill of controlling my buoyancy and clearing my mask. Everything went well in the pool, but who knew what would happen in the sea?

The next morning, along with a bunch of other divers on the boat with Lembongan Dive Adventure, we headed to Toya Pakeh, a dive spot located between Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Penida.

“The water is crystal clear,” said Annastinna, a 40-year-old Canadian, inspecting the water from the boat. She was right. Clusters of coral and anemones hazily swayed through the surging water beneath us — a moody window into another world.

Before we jumped into the water, Emo the dive master briefed us about the dive, including the signals we would need to use to communicate underwater.

Feeling both excited and edgy, I took my turn to perform my back-roll entrance. Feeling thrilled, for I could hardly wait to embrace the under-water experience again, and a little bit nervous that my diving equipment could malfunction, and that I might forgot the important skills I had rushed through earlier in the pool, I fell.

But the uneasy feeling left the moment that I began sinking into the cold salty water, and took in the view around me. Down under the water’s surface it was clear, astonishing and wonderful!

Vast slope of various kinds of coral lay below. A couple of majestic table corals sat amid a sea of pale purple cabbage corals.

I gaped in awe as a school of colorful fish whizzed here and there, while anemones danced in a rhythmic motion. I caught a glimpse of three clarks anemone fish (Amphirion clarkii) — the star of the Finding Nemo animated movie. So many of them — probably his relatives — hovered among the tentacles of those peachy anemones.

And I quickly found the whole gang — a Dori-like blue surgeonfish and a flock of moorish idol fishes (Zanclus cornutus) — one of Nemo’s tank inhabitants — scurring among the coral. A blue starfish hung droopily on the corals. Fortunately, there were no hungry sharks masquerading as herbivores in sight.

And then a school of funny black-and-white-and-yellow stripped Oriental Sweetlips swung in an arrow formation. A big titan triggerfish with its glaringly colorful skin – it looked like it was wearing make-up – swayed nonchalantly, confident enough to move alone.

The scenery was so full, yet so quiet. The only sound I heard was the bubbling breathing from my second stage mouthpiece. This was indeed an idyllic paradise.

The second dive took me to a place in Mangrove Point, a spot just to the right of a mangrove forest in the north-eastern part of Nusa Lembongan.

The current was stronger here. Since even our most intense efforts at beating the current by kicking in the opposite direction proved pointless, we gave ourselves over to the stream, floating in the miracle sea once again.
A triplefins poses with wavy corals. JP/Isao Soga

But the time did fly. The 40-minute dive felt like only 5 minutes, and the 200 bars of fresh air in our tanks had already reached the caution zone. It was time to go up!

“It’s amazing. I should come back again one day,” said Eva, a 28 years old Czeh Republican national who along with her Jamaican husband was on her last day in Indonesia.

“It turned out that three weeks of traveling around Indonesia isn’t enough. I should have extended my vacation to three months!” she exclaimed.

She had a point. My two-week vacation on this very island alone felt like the blink of an eye. I swear I’ll be back here soon, to hunt down the famous mola-mola, and of course, the gigantic manta ray.

How to get there

• Take a public boat or speedboat from Sanur Beach. The public boat departs to Nusa Lembongan every day at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and the speedboat departs at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

There are three departures to Sanur on Nusa Lembongan’s jetty at 8 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. everyday. Of course, the schedule depends on the weather.

•If you want to dive, there are several dive operators on Nusa Lembongan. Pick one that best suits you. And there are at least seven dive spots around Nusa Lembongan. Here they are, along with the underwater creatures recently spotted there:

•Crystal Bay: Mola-mola, manta ray, worty frog fish, turtle, eagle ray.

•Manta Point: Manta ray, turtle, blue spotted stingray, nudibranch, sea snake, nurse shark.

•SD: Breaching mola-mola, turtle, clouded moray, triggerfish, lionfish, yellow edge moray, tuna, barracuda.

•Toya Pakeh: Giant trevally, batfish, nudibranch, mantis shrimp, ribbon eels.

•Mangrove Point: Puffer, angelfish, reef shark, moray eel, barracuda, triggerfish.

•Pontoon: Lionfish, crocodile fish, rigid shrimp fish.

•Blue Corner: Marble ray, eagle ray, barracuda, turtle, nudis, angelfish, batfish, sea snake, eel, reef shark.

Lau Kawar And The Legend

Fig. Lau Kawar

The fact that it is laid on the high plains is also the reason to address this area as The legend of Lau Kawar (Kawar Lake) is one which is widely spread among the people of Karo regency, North Sumatra. This regency is 2, 127. 25 km2 wide and locates on the Bukit BarisanTanah Karo Simalem. Its climate is chilly with the temperature around 16 to 17 Celsius scale. The soil is fertile as well. Therefore, it is no wonder that this area is surrounded by beautiful views. One of those natural views is the Lau Kawar lake which is situated in Kuta Gugung village, Simpang Empat Sub-district, Tanah Karo Regency. The clear and calm water as well as the beautiful orchids in the surroundings make it even more beautiful.

The people believe that Lau Kawar lake was once a village entitled Kawar. It was a fertile area that its people depended their lives on farming. The land produced wonderful harvest though not even an amount of fertilizer or such kind was used to help the plants grew. However, there was once a disaster that turns the village into a lake. What did happen actually? The complete story is as follow.

***

Village. Its people were mostly farmers, and the land did produce wonderful harvest. It is said that one day the harvest was doubled compared to the previous year. The barns were extremely full with rice that they Once upon a time, there was a very fertile land at the Karo Regency. It was known as the Kawar couldn`t store the whole harvest. For this reason, the people agreed to work together and have a selamatan by performing cultural ceremonies.

The selamatan day came at last. The village was decorated wonderfully. The people were all dressed up colorfully with various accessories here and there. The females were busy cooking many kinds of foods for the ceremony.

A performance of Gendang Guro-Guro Aron (name of dance party) was also held during the ceremony. This performance was a special art from the people of Karo. Certainly, all of the villagers attended this annual ceremony except an old woman who was paralyzed. Nevertheless, her son, daughter in law, and grandson were all at the ceremony.

The old woman lied on her bed alone. “I really want to be at the party but I cannot even stand on my feet”, sobbed the old woman in her deepest heart. She could only see the merry party from distance. The faint sound of the Gendang Guro-Guro refreshed her memory when she was still a teenage girl. The boys and girls would usually dance in pairs when the Gendang Guro-guro was performed in a party. It was a beautiful moment for her. No matter what, all was past. Nothing she could do but just to remember the days when she was still young. She was alone with no one talking to her. She would just cry and cry to relieve herself from such a burden in her days as an old woman. No one really cared about her. Everyone minded their own business, and she was abandoned like a trash.

The lunch time came and all of the people at the party gathered around the table for the foods that had been prepared. Many kinds of delicious meals were on the table: grilled lamb, pork, and chicken which were just finished being cooked. All of them enjoyed the foods happily, and they also laughed once a while. The cheer crowded atmosphere somehow made the old woman`s son and daughter in law forget about her. They completely forgot that the mother was alone in the house.

Contradictory to what was going on at the party, the old woman was starving in the house. She didn`t eat even a bite since morning. Being so hungry, she really hoped that either her son or her daughter in law would come and bring her something to eat. It`s been hours she spent waiting for someone coming with something to eat, yet she was still alone in the house: no one came as she expected.

“My goodness, I am so hungry. Why any of my family didn`t come to bring me something to eat?” sighed her with her body shivering for hunger. She forced herself up from the bed and searched for something to eat in the kitchen, but nothing, it was all in vain. It was that the daughter in law had planned not to cook that day, realizing that foods would be prepared in the feast.

The poor old woman powerlessly came back to her bed. She was so disappointed and sad that her tears dropped. She cried for her poor life. “Dear God, how could my children do this to me? How could they enjoy the party without even thinking about me? How could they be so cruel to me My God?” cried the poor old lady.

The lunch was over after several hours, and suddenly the man remembered about his mother. He rushed to his wife, “My wife! Have you brought some foods for mother?”

“Not yet” the wife responded.

“Wrap some of the foods for her then, and ask our son to take it home for mother” asked the husband.

“Alright”, said the woman while hurriedly wrapping the foods for the mother. After that, she asked her son to take the foods home for her as her husband told her previously, “My son, please take these foods for your grandmother”.

“I`ll do mother”, said the son and then he rushed to the house. He immediately handed the foods to his grandmother as soon as he reached the house and then he ran back quickly to the party.

The old woman was very happy for the foods. Finally, she got something to eat. She unwrapped the package happily and was so astonished for what she saw in it. She was so disappointed to find only leftovers: there were only some bones of beef and lamb which were almost without any meat to eat! “What is this! Do they think I am an animal? Why did they give me leftovers and bones!” moaned her furiously.

The mother stored complete grilled meat into the package in fact. However, the grandson ate the foods on his way to his grand mother that only bones were left. The old woman did know anything about this that she thought her son and daughter in law did it on purpose. She felt so disappointed and humiliated that she hardly held her tears to fall down. She then prayed to God to curse both her son and daughter in law.

“My God, they were sinful to me. I beg You to punish them!” said the woman in her prayer.

There was a very strong earthquake not even a minute when the woman completed her prayer. The sky was suddenly dark and cloudy, and there was a great thunder followed by heavy rain. The crowd in the party ran here and there in panic. There was no more laughter in the party, replaced by cries and shouts from every direction. No one could escape from the terrible disaster. The wealthy village was drowned in a short time and there was not even a single person survived.

The drowned village turned into a big crater several days later and it was flooded by water. The people in the surroundings later on call the it Lau Kawar. And this marked the origin of the Lau Kawar in Tanah Karo Regency , North Sumatra.

Psychedelic Screen Melt Illusion

Like always, once I get to see improved, better version of a previously featured submission – it goes live immediately! It doesn’t matter how many times similar effect has already been showcased. And what we have here today is “seemingly animated” pattern on steroids! If I can recall correctly, last one I have enjoyed so much (belonging to the same category) was the Running Snakes promo. Check out the psychedelic formation below! Can you really believe the image is static, and that the motion is just an illusion?

Try opening it in full-size to experience the effect in its full glory. From now on, this one is my favorite!

Hidden Persons Optical Illusion

It is really amazing how such amazing works of art get unnoticed, and somehow manage to bypass my approval queue. Just when you get to think there are no more major league illusions left to feature, another wave of magnificent works gets re-submitted by our loyal fans – I thank you for that! Btw, many of you asked how illusion submission works in the first place? I thought the footer (email) link “Submit Illusion” was obvious enough, but your input suggests I should bring more attention to it…

Let me see if I can come with some sort of submission form in the following days…

Regarding the painting, it’s another creation by famous Octavio Ocampo. Observe it closely. How long does it take before you notice additional persons present?

Top 10 Worst Moments in Boxing History

Professional Boxing is known as the “Sweet Science”, but corruption, a lack of a central governing body and the rise of MMA have threatened to end this glorious sport. Mega fights still bring in huge revenues, but they are few and far between. We take a look back at 10 events which have contributed to the downfall.

10
James Butler

Butler was a very promising young fighter from New York City, known by the nickname “Harlem Hammer”. In November 2001, James Butler fought Richard “The Alien” Grant. The bout was a charity event to benefit survivors of the September 11 attacks. After losing by unanimous decision Butler made his way to the middle of the ring to purportedly congratulate Grant. Grant reacted by stretching his hand out in a motion to embrace. Instead, Butler (who had already removed his gloves) threw a vicious haymaker to Grant’s face. Richard Grant suffered numerous facial injuries including a broken jaw, lacerated tongue and several stitches. Butler, in turn, was arrested and convicted of assault, and served prison time for the attack.

Unfortunately, the tale does not end there. James Butler continued his career after this incident, but could never duplicate his earlier success. In October of 2004, Butler was arrested and charged with murdering Sam Kellerman, brother of HBO Boxing analyst Max Kellerman, with (ironically) a hammer, and setting his body on fire after a dispute. Butler pled guilty in 2006, and was sentenced to 29 years in prison.

9
Riot at Madison Square Garden

Polish born Andrew Golota entered the ring on July 11, 1996, with an exceptional 27-0 record and on the cusp of Superstardom. All he had to do was get past the 38-1 former Undisputed Heavyweight champ, Riddick Bowe. Golota responded with a brilliant performance. The Polish sensation clobbered the ex-champ round after round, almost into submission. He was well ahead on points and seemingly close to scoring a knockout.

In the 7th round, the fight began to take a very strange turn. Golota (for reasons known only to himself) commenced to blatantly and repeatedly punch Bowe below the belt line. Golota was warned several times and even received point deductions, but his behavior continued. After several more flagrant low blows the referee was forced to disqualify him. Riddick Bowe’s corner responded by rushing the ring and viciously attacking Golota and his team. This triggered a full scale, racially charged riot, which spilled into the stands. MSG security was not equipped to handle a massive brawl and had to wait for New York riot police to arrive. Reinforcements finally arrived but not before dozens of fans, boxing personnel and police were injured in this disgraceful and bizarre incident.

8
Only in America

Not just anyone can own a professional football franchise. Not just anyone can own a baseball franchise. Anyone can promote a fight, even a convicted killer and numbers operator from Cleveland. In 1974, Don King very shrewdly promoted his first professional fight. It turned out to be the famed Ali vs Foreman “Rumble in the Jungle” in Zaire. This mega-event instantly transformed King into a major player in boxing for the next 30 years.

But, unfortunately the major player likes to play dirty; King’s many exploits are infamous. He has perpetrated fraud after fraud on any and all promising young fighters to join his stable. King has been implicated in: murder, bribery, theft, bookmaking, breaches of contract, and mafia assisted racketeering. Larry Holmes once said, “Don King wears his hair like that so he can hide his horns”.

7
Sonny Liston and the Mob

By all accounts Liston had a woeful childhood. Extremely poor and physically abused, Liston left home at an early age and participated in numerous violent crimes. While incarcerated, his boxing skills were discovered and, soon after his release, he began destroying a string of opponents on his way to the Heavyweight title. Liston’s incredible prowess caught the attention of several mafia associates including, Frankie Carbo and “Blinky” Palermo.

By the time Sonny Liston fought a young Cassius Clay on May 25, 1965, many in the press already suspected that Liston was controlled by the mob. He nevertheless participated in one of the most obvious fixes in sports history. In the very first round, Liston took a dive and allowed himself to be counted out after Clay threw his famous “Phantom Punch”. Slow motion review shows a quick combination that seemingly misses, or at best only grazes, Liston. Coincidentally, their first fight also ended controversially when Liston refused to come out of his corner for the 7th round, claiming a shoulder injury. Sonny Liston would die 5 years later, under very suspicious circumstances.

6
Corrupt Richard Steele

A very rare event occurred on March 17, 1990. On this night two undefeated champions, who were both in the same weight class and who were both in their prime, fought each other. Julio Cesar Chavez who was 68-0 (and promoted by Don King) met undefeated Olympic gold medalist, and welterweight champ, Meldrick Taylor. Chavez was the favorite but it was Taylor who dominated the fight from the opening bell.

In late going Taylor’s trademark speed was beginning to wane but he still held a commanding lead on all scorecards going into the final round. Moments before the end of the match, Chavez scored a knockdown but Taylor rose to his feet quickly. Had the fight continued, Taylor would have still won by unanimous decision, but it was not meant to be. The bout referee, Richard Steele, stopped the fight with a mere 2 seconds left, and awarded the victory to Chavez. There were immediate protests from Taylor’s camp, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission (whose integrity has been routinely called into question) upheld the decision. Taylor’s career and health were subsequently ruined and Steele, who notoriously favored Don King fighters, forever tarnished the sport.

5
International Boxing Federation Scandal

The IBF, among other entities, is a major sanctioning body which is based in New Jersey. The way boxing works is: each sanctioning body has a champion. Champions are only allowed to fight boxers ranked in the top 15. Ranking committees determine who gets ranked. Ranking committee chairmen have the final say and are notoriously corruptible.

In November 1999, IBF president Bob Lee Sr. was indicted and convicted on numerous racketeering charges. Lee was conspiring with his rankings chairman, C. Douglass Beavers, to rig the rankings system to favor boxers whose promoters and handlers paid them cash bribes. The duo routinely took hundreds of thousands of dollars from the likes of Don King and Cedric Kushner, in return for artificially inflating the rankings of their fighters. Promoters who didn’t pay didn’t see title fights. The result was: a completely corrupt system which was not in any way based on merit. Another black eye for boxing.

4
Boxing’s not so Golden Age

James D. Norris was a very wealthy and extremely powerful man in the mid 20th century. He owned many companies and was heavily involved in the sports world, including owning a National Hockey League franchise, a major stake in Madison Square Garden and champion racehorses. Jim Norris was also a very unsavory individual and was widely known to associate with criminals. As president of the International Boxing Club, Norris had a virtual monopoly on championship fights, due to a lucrative contract the IBC had to broadcast fights on national television.

Jim Norris was personally responsible for fixing numerous bouts, including: Harry Thomas vs Max Schmeling in 1937, and Jake Lamotta vs Billy Fox in 1946. His corruption knew no limits. Besides match fixing he was also unofficially managing many boxers (usually against their will) and persuading them to hire his associates as advisers. Norris’ actions perpetuated a chain of farce’s which were passed off as competitive bouts to an unsuspecting public, and helped erode boxing’s integrity.

Seoul, Korea – 1988 Olympics

Many people remember a young Roy Jones Jr. being robbed of a gold medal by corrupt Olympic judges, but few remember an even uglier incident that preceded it. New Zealander Keith Walker was officiating a bantamweight bout between Byun Jong Il of South Korea and Alexander Hristov of Bulgaria. The fight was an ugly foul-filled affair and Walker had to repeatedly penalize Jong for head butting.

At the conclusion of the fight, Hristov was announced the winner but this only incensed Jong’s countrymen. Numerous South Korean boxing officials and coaches stormed the ring and viciously attacked referee Keith Walker with punches, kicks, bottles and even chairs. The terrified Walker barely escaped serious injury and headed directly to the airport and took the first plane back to New Zealand. Shamed and embarrassed, the Korean Boxing Federation president and the president of the Korean Olympic Committee both resigned after this deplorable incident.

The actions of Panama Lewis

At one time Carlos “Panama” Lewis was a world class trainer, his character, on the other hand, was anything but world class. Despite already being under a cloud of suspicion for allegedly giving his boxers water spiked with illegal stimulants and for gambling on fights that he was involved in; Panama Lewis concocted a wicked plan for his fighter, Luis Resto. Resto was nothing more than a journeyman fighter, or simply a professional opponent when he took on undefeated rising star Billy Collins Jr, on June 16, 1983

Knowing Resto was overmatched, Panama and another trainer removed padding from Resto’s gloves and poured an illegal hardening agent on his hand wraps. Luis Resto proceeded to brutalize his unsuspecting opponent for 10 rounds. After being declared the winner, Resto approached Collins’ corner. Collins’ father, who at that point was suspicious of Resto’s new found power, touched Resto’s hand and immediately notified ringside officials. The gloves and hand wraps in question were confiscated by the state Athletic Commission and both were brought up on charges. Panama Lewis and Luis Resto both had their licenses permanently revoked and were given prison sentences. Sadly, Billy Collins Jr. would never fight again, his once promising career shattered by the injuries he received. Collins Jr. was dead less than one year later, a suspected suicide.

Death of Duk Koo Kim

A superstar in South Korea, Kim had risen all the way to the number one lightweight contender and earned a world title shot against the famed Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, on November 13, 1982. The bout was extremely brutal, especially for Kim, who had begun to wear down in the latter rounds after absorbing tremendous punishment from the champion. In the early part of the 14th round, Mancini hit Kim with a crushing right hand that caused him to fly toward the ropes and hit his head on the canvas.

Kim managed to rise but the fight was stopped by the referee. Minutes later Duk Koo Kim collapsed into a coma and was carried out of the ring and taken directly to the hospital. Tragically, the Korean star died 4 days later from severe brain trauma. Out of the hundreds of recorded ring fatalities, Kim’s death was one of the saddest. Kim’s opponent, Ray Mancini, would never again be the same caliber fighter, and it was widely reported that he blamed himself for Kim’s death. Kim’s mother committed suicide three months after her son’s death by drinking a bottle of pesticide. The bout’s referee, Richard Green, consumed by guilt, also committed suicide shortly after the fight.

Low Signals Problem? Try 5 Ways to Boost WiFi Signal

If you are having trouble connecting to a WiFi connection due to low signals, then it’s really easy to resolve this common issue. It’s simply a matter of minutes to find out what’s causing low reception. There’s a common checklist to check and boost the signals.

There are ways to extend your WiFi signal, and most of them won’t cost a penny. Below are 5 most common but 100% working tips to strengthen your WiFi signals.

Avoid Bad Neighbors

WiFi is a radio signal itself, and interfere other signals nearby. So the signals from microwave ovens, cordless phones and even your neighbor’s wireless router may interfere. So try to steer clear of those as well.
Extend the Antenna

There are some decent booster antennas out there that you can purchase in addition to your current router to help the signal extend out further. You just plug them directly into the router base and it can give you that boost in the signal that you need. Hawking makes several types of wireless antenna boosters.
Repeaters

This little gizmo just takes in the wireless signal, boosts it up to full strength, and spits it back out again. Place the repeater within range of the router, and near the computer that needs a wireless signal. Linksys and D-Link offer wireless repeaters, also called range extenders. If you have an Apple computer, look into the AirportExpress as a signal repeater.
Upgrade Your Router

If you’ve owned the same router for several years, it might be good to go pick up a new one if you want to expand your connection. Some of the latest models have a stronger signal. The newer 802.11n routers generally have a stronger broadcast signal, and they’ll work even if you have an 802.11B or G adapter in yourcomputer.
Upgrade Your Software

One of the most basic things you can do is to make sure your router software is up to date. To do this, visit thewebsite of the maker of your router, whether it is Linksys, D-Link, or some other brand. Check for your model number and make any updates necessary. These common tips work for any type of WiFi connection. In your home, office, school or anywhere. Hope you’ll find these tips helping and I’m sure one of these will work for you. Do share your experience if any of the above worked for you.

Best Junk File and Registry Cleaner in your USB Flash Drive

CCleaner is by far the most popular junk and registry file cleaner of all. The freeware is small and takes a very little space. We hadd already reviewed the features of CCleaner in past.

You may already know the desktop version of the all time popular CCleaner. But make sure you’ve also got the portable version of CCleaner as well.

From finding and deleting broken items in the Windows Registry, CCleaner Portable cleans out bits of InternetExplorer that can compromise your privacy (such as the cache and cookies), deletes chkdsk file fragments, manages restore points, and does an assortment of other tasks.

The portable version is a single executable file that doesn’t require any installation. You can carry it in yourflash drive and directly execute from the drive without even copying to the system. There’s no difference in the feature and functions between full standard and portable version of CCleaner.

5 Tips to Improve Your Windows 7 System’s Speed

he introduction of Microsoft’s Windows 7 was met with great reception and reviews from critics, especially those who didn’t think much of the previous OS of Windows Vista. Windows 7 has been mentioned to have the stability and security of popular Windows XP, with the visual look of Vista; 7 is what Vista should have been.

But with all of the features and new bells and whistles, Windows 7 can slow down some systems. Here are five ways in which you can speed up your system to get work done.

1. Upgrade Your System

While Windows 7 can run on systems that meet the minimum specifications, it’s always a better practice to meet or exceed that of the recommended specs. This allows for the system to work programs in the background without taxing your system or slowing down your movies, music, or work.

2. Disable Aero Feature

One of the features that carried over from Vista was that of the Aero technology. Basically eye candy, the technology allows for transparent taskbars and windows, as well as some quick shortcuts and features. For systems who only meet the minimum requirements, this only slows down the computer. This may be disabled automatically if the hardware doesn’t meet the requirements, but if not -
Right click on the desktop and choose “Personalize”
Within the box, click the option of “Window Color”
Uncheck “enable transparency”, then choose to open the classic appearance
Choose the standard Windows 7 Appearance.

3. Disable Desktop Gadgets

Gadgets are another feature that was carried over from Vista, giving users a way to view different items from their desktop. Windows 7 comes with a clock gadget, a weather gadget, and a CPU monitor just to name a few, with more to download from both Microsoft and third party companies. The more gadgets you have on your desktop, the more the system is working to keep them up to date. To disable gadgets:
Go to the START menu and select ‘control panel’
Within the Control Panel, find ‘Programs & Features’. Under this is a link to turn off Windows features.
Within in Windows features, uncheck the Windows Gadget Platform.

4. Turn Off Unused Windows Features

There are some standard features of Windows – like games, Messenger – that be turned off as well, especially if you never use them. As above to disable the gadgets, you can disable these features. Try not to disable features you aren’t familiar with, as you could be turning off something important.

5. Prevent Unwanted Programs from Running at Startup

When you turn on your computer, several programs will turn on. Like the operating system, any office programs, gadgets, and others. To speed up your computer, have some of these programs not start when thecomputer does.
Go to the START menu and choose ‘run’.
In the textbox, type in ‘msconfig’. This brings up a console in which you can configure parts of MicrosoftWindows, such as what programs should start.
Select the ‘start up’ tab.
Go through the list and uncheck programs that you don’t want to start up, like a cell phone manager program, an office program (like MS Office). Make sure you don’t uncheck the operating system! This are just some ways in which you can speed up your Windows 7 computer, but there are more, such as upgrading parts of your computer or removing programs; it all depends on you and the customization of yourWindows 7.

Top 10 Modern Methods of Execution

We have all heard about the various methods of execution used around the world in civilized nations, but quite often we don’t know the methods involved in executing the act. With this list I hope to shed some light on thebackground of an execution, modern style. All but two of these methods of execution are still in use today. [WARNING: This list includes graphic images.]
1. Lethal Injection
Image-4
Lethal injection room in Huntsville, Texas

In the short time before an execution by lethal injection, the prisoner is prepared for his death. This can include a change of clothing, a last meal, and a shower. The prisoner is taken to thesaline solution is fed through the tubes. These tubes are then fed through the wall in to an anteroom from where the execution will be carried out. The anteroom contains direct telephone connections to officials who have the power to stay the execution. Once the IV tubes are connected, the curtains are drawn back so that witnesses may watch the execution, and the prisoner is allowed to make his last statement. execution chamber and two IV tubes are inserted in to his arms; a
Unless a stay is given, the execution begins. There can be one or more executioners, and sometimes in the case of multiple executioners, the lethal dose is given by only one so that no one knows who delivered it. The executioners are shielded from the view ofthe prisoner and witnesses. The drugs can be delivered by a machine, but due to the fear of mechanical failure, most US states prefer to manually inject the drugs in to the IV. The drugs are then administered in the following order:
Sodium thiopental: This drug, also known as Pentathol is a barbiturate used as a surgical anesthetic. In surgery, a dose of up to 150mg is used; inexecution, up to 5,000mg is used. This is a lethal dose. From this point on if the prisoner is still alive, he should feel nothing.
Pancuronium bromide: Also known as Pavulon, this is a muscle relaxant given in a strong enough dose to paralyse the diaphragm and lungs. This drug takes effect in 1-3 minutes. A normal medical dose is 40 – 100mcg per kilogram; the dose delivered in anexecution is up to 100mg.
Potassium chloride: This is a toxic agent which induces cardiac arrest. Not all states use this as the first two drugs are sufficient to bring about death.
Saline solution is used to flush the IV between each dose. Within a minute of two after the final dose is given, a doctor declares the prisoner dead. The body is then sent to the coroner for verification and sometimes an autopsy and is released to the family for burial or is buried by the state.
2. The Electric Chair
M197400560386
Electric Chair at Sing Sing

The electric chair was invented by Harold P. Brown who was employed by Thomas Edison for the sole purpose of investigating the uses of electricity forexecution . Brown, a dentist used to working with people in chairs, used a chair design for his device. At the time there was still competition to see whether Edison’s direct current (DC) or Westinghouse’s alternating current (AC) would win the current war. Edison was in favor of using his opponents AC as he thought it would lead people to believe that AC was more dangerous than DC. In fact, it would make little difference which current were used at the voltage needed for anexecution. Edison was so keen to alienate Westinghouse, that he tried to get people to refer to execution by electrocution as “westinghousing” someone. The chair was first adopted in 1889and the first execution took place in 1890 in New York.
In execution by electric chair, the prisoner is strapped to the chair with metal straps and a wet sponge is placed in his head to aid conductivity. Electrodes are placed on the head and leg to create a closed circuit. Depending on the physical state of the prisoner, two currents of varying level and duration are applied. This is generally 2,000 volts for 15 seconds for the first current to cause unconsciousness and to stop the heart. The second current is usually lowered to 8 amps. The current will normally cause severe damage to internal organsand the body can heat up to 138 °F (59 °C). While unconsciousness should occur within the first second or two, there have been occasions where it has taken much longer, leading people to speak out against this method ofexecution.
The post-execution cleanup is an unpleasant task as skin can melt to the electrodes and the person often loses control over bodily functions. The skin is also often burnt. The last use of the chair was on the 12th of September in Tennessee (6 days ago as of writing this). You can view a gruesome image of a person after being executed bythe electric chair here.
3. Gas Chamber
Gaschamber L-1
Gas chamber at Mississippi State Penitentiary

The gas chamber has been used for executions for a considerable number of years. It has gained the most notoriety from its use in the German prison camps during World War II where it was used to exterminate millions of people in one of the worst cases of genocide in the 20th century. All of the five US states that still use the gas chamber allow the prisoner to choose death by lethal injection instead. The last death by gas chamber in the US was in 1999 when German Walter LaGrand was executed in Arizona. There are unconfirmed reports that North Korea is using the gas chamber as a method ofexecution and to test poisonous gasses on prisoners.
Prior to the execution, the executioner will enter the chamber and place potassium cyanide (KCN) pellets into a small compartment beneath the execution chair. The prisoner is then brought in and secured to the chair. The chamber is sealed and the executioner pours a quantity of concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) through a tube which leads to a holding compartment in the chair. The curtains are drawn back for witnesses to see the execution and the prisoner is asked to make his last statement. After the last statement, a level is thrown by the executioner and the acid mixes with the cyanide pellets generating lethal hydrogen cyanide (HCN) gas. The prisoners will generally have been told to take deep breaths in order to speed up unconsciousness, but in most cases they hold their breath. Death from hydrogen cyanide is painful and unpleasant.
After the prisoner is dead, the chamber is purged of gas and neutralized with anhydrous ammonia (NH3). Both the ammonia and the acid that must be removed from the chamber are highly dangerous. Guards with oxygen masks then enter the chamber and remove the body so that it can be examined by a doctor.
4. Single Person Shooting
Vietnam-1
Execution of a Vietcong captian

Execution by shooting is the most common method of execution in the world, used in over 70 countries. Whilst most of these countries use the firing squad, single person shooting is still found. In Soviet Russia, a single bulletto the back of the head was the most frequently used method of execution for military and non-military alike. This is still the main method of execution in Communist China though the gunshot can be to either the neck or head. In the past, the Chinese government would ask the family of the executed person to pay the price of the bullet. In Taiwan, the prisoner is first injected with a strong anesthetic to render him senseless and then a bullet is fired in to his heart.
5. Firing Squad
Firingsquad500-1
Antonio Echazarreta executed in 1913 in Mexio

The firing squad is considered by many to be the most honorable method of execution, and for that reason it was specifically not used on war criminals. While the method differs widely from country to country, generally the condemned is blindfolded and restrained. A group of men then fire a single bullet into the heart of the prisoner . In some cases, one of the shooters is given a blank – so that afterwards he will feel less guilt. None of the shooters knows who has a blank or, in fact, if any of them do. In the most recentexecution by firing squad in Utah, the brother of the executed man stated that there were five bullet holes in his brother’s shirt, indicating that every shooter fired a live round. Here is an eyewitness account of theexecution of William Johnson, a deserter in the Army of the Potomac in 1861.
All being ready the Marshal waved his handkerchief as the signal, and the firing party discharged the volley. Johnson did not move, remaining in a sitting posture for several seconds after the rifles were discharged. Then he quivered a little, and fell over beside his coffin. He was still alive, however, and the four reserves were called to complete the work. It was found that two of the firing party, Germans, had not discharged their pieces, and they were immediately put in irons. Johnson was shot several times in the heart by the first volley. Each of the four shots fired by the reserves took effect in his head, and he died instantly. One penetrated his chin, another his left cheek, while two entered the brain just above the left eyebrow. He died at precisely a quarter to four o’clock.
In the United States only two states allow execution by firing squad: Idaho, and Oklahoma; though Utah still has four prisoners on death row who were sentenced when it was lawful there and they may be permitted to be executed in this way.
6. Hanging
Iran Hanging Outrage 2-1
17 and 18 year old boys hanged in Iran for homosexuality

Hanging is carried out in a variety of ways: the short drop is when the prisoner is made to stand on an object which is then thrust away – leaving them to die by strangulation. This was a common method of hanging used by the Nazis and was the most common form used before the 1850s. Death is slow and painful. Suspension hanging (very popular in Iran) is when the gallows itself is movable. The prisoner stands on the ground with the noose around their neck and the gallows is then lifted in to the air, taking the prisoner with it. The standard drop was in common use in English nations after the 1850s – it involved tying the noose around the prisoner’s neck and then dropping them a short distance (usually 4-6 feet) to break the neck. This was the method used to execute the Nazi war criminals. The final method is the long drop, devised in 1872 in which the weight of a person was taken in to account to determine the correct rope and drop to be used to ensure the breaking of the neck. This was the method used by Albert Pierrepoint, the last executioner of England, described here in more detail:
The night before the execution, Pierrepoint would visit the condemned man in his cell with the Warden. The prisoner was not told that pierrepoint was his executioner. The purpose of the visit was to size the man up. Pierrepoint would use the information he had gained on the visit to decide what thickness of rope and what length of drop to use. He would soak the rope in water and would hang a sandbag the weight of the prisoner at the end to prevent stretching during the execution. The next day pierrepoint would put a cloth over the face of the prisoner and tighten the noose around his neck. He was very careful to ensure that the trapdoor beneath the condemned would be opened as soon after the noose went on as possible and would often kick the level with his foot. The person would then drop through the trapdoor and their neck would break, causing death.
There have been some instances where the long drop method has caused decapitation – the most recent of which was the hanging of Saddam Hussein’s half brother, Barzan Ibrahim al-Tikriti, in Iraq in 2007.
If you can play real audio, here is a BBC interview with Pierrepoint.
7. Beheading
Saudi Killings-1
Sentenced at 15, Dhahian Rakan al-Sibai’i, executed July 2007

In some nations that adhere to Islamic Sharia law, beheadings are still a commonly used method of execution. The most frequently seen cases involve beheading by a curved, single-edged sword. While many nations allow beheading by law, Saudi Arabia is the country that uses it most often. The sentence is normally carried out on a Friday night in public outside the main mosque of the city after prayers. The penalty can be dealt for rape, murder, drug related crimes, and apostasy (rejection of religious beliefs).
Saudi Arabia frequently comes under fire from international agencies because of the fact that they continue to pass this sentence on minors. Saudi Arabian officials state that they are not in breach of international law because the sentence is not carried out until the child has reached the age of 18. This was the case with Dhahian Rakan al-Sibai’i (pictured above) who was sentenced at 15 but executed this year at the age of 18.
8. Guillotine
Scaryweidmann-1
Eugène Weidmann, last public guillotine execution in France, 1939

Contrary to popular belief, Joseph-Ignace Guillotin did not invent the Guillotine; he suggested that a method of execution be devised that was quick and to be used on all people regardless of class. He sat on the committee that eventually designed the device, but it was actually Antoine Louis who came up with the design that was then used to build the first functioning guillotine. This is one of the two execution methods on this list which is no longer used anywhere in the world.
The device itself is a large timber frame with a space at the bottom for the neck of the prisoner. At the top of the machine is a large angled blade. Once the prisoner is secured, the blade is dropped, severing the head and bringing about immediate death. Much speculation exists as to whether or not the person dies immediately, and one man went so far as to ask a prisoner to blink after his head was cut off if he could. The accounts tell us that he did blink, but it is most likely that if he did, it would have been a post-death twitch.
The last public guillotining in France (photo above) was secretly filmed, and the scandalous behavior of the onlookers caused the government to ban public executions. It was the official method of execution in France until the death penalty was outlawed in 1981.
9. Stoning
6Cmt1K3-1
A stoning in Iran

Stoning to death is when a person’s movements are restricted and an organized group throws stones at them until dead. Under Islamic Sharia law, stoning is an acceptable method of execution and it is used in many Islamic nations. In Iran, stoning is sanctioned for adultery and other crimes. Article 104 of the Law of Hodoud provides that the stones should not be so large that a person dies after being hit with two of them, nor so small as to be defined as pebbles, but must cause severe injury.
“The penalty for adultery under Article 83 of the penal code, called the Law of Hodoud is flogging (100 lashes of the whip) for unmarried male and female offenders. Married offenders may be punished by stoning regardless of their gender, but the method laid down for a man involves his burial up to his waist, and for a woman up to her neck (article 102). The law provides that if a person who is to be stoned manages to escape, he or she will be allowed to go free. Since it is easier for a man to escape, this discrimination literally becomes a matter of life and death.” [Source]
Sentences to death by stoning, or stoning without a sentence have occurred in Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iran, Pakistan, Sudan, Saudi-Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in recent years, according to the International Society of Human Rights. Videos of recent stonings have been smuggled out of Iran. You can watch them here. The most recent stoning in Iran was in 2007 when Jaffar Kiani was stoned to death for adultery.
10. Garrote
555Px-Garroteexecution1901-1
1901 execution by garotte in Manila

The garrote is the second method of execution on this list which is no longer sanctioned by law in any country though training in its use is still carried out in the French Foreign Legion. The garrote is a device that strangles a person to death (as in the photograph above). It can also be used to break a person’s neck. The device was used in Spain until it was outlawed in 1978 with the abolition of the death penalty. It normally consisted of a seat in which the prisoner was restrained while the executioner tightened a metal band around his neck until he died. Some versions of the garrote incorporated a metal bolt which pressed in to the spinal chord, breaking the neck. This spiked version is known as the Catalan garrote. The last execution by garrote was José Luis Cerveto in October 1977. Andorra was the last country in the world to outlaw its use, doing so in 1990.
